Pink light for breast cancer – NZ landmarks light up

Landmark buildings around New Zealand will light up pink from tomorrow, October 1, in support of Breast Cancer Month.

From the Old Municipal Building in Whangarei to the Otago Settlers Museum in Dunedin, 21 local landmarks will join more than 200 other iconic or historic structures around the world as part of Global Illumination, an initiative established by Estee Lauder Companies in 2000.

Auckland’s Sky Tower will be the most visible pink icon, due to its prominence on the Auckland skyline. In Christchurch, tourists and locals will get a pink triple whammy, with Christchurch Airport and Airways Tower glowing pink, along with Canterbury Museum in the city centre.

“Global Illumination reminds people of the significance of Breast Cancer Month and the battle to reduce the impact of the disease on New Zealand families,” said Van Henderson chief executive of the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. “We’re very grateful to all the councils and building owners who have agreed to light up pink. Their commitment will keep help raise awareness of all the fundraising activities going on in October.”

Funds raised through the NZBCF’s Pink Ribbon Street Appeal (October 9-10) and through community fundraising events around the country will go toward research into new targeted treatments, life-saving awareness and education programmes, and support for women going through breast cancer.
