Information for health professionals
myHT Guide is Breast Cancer Foundation NZ’s flagship nurse-led support programme being launched in late 2025. It helps people taking hormone therapy after breast cancer to prevent recurrence. Currently 17,000 New Zealanders are collecting scripts for hormone therapy for breast cancer. However, up to 50% of these women do not complete treatment. We know that primary care is busy and has time constraints.
myHT Guide is a web-based programme providing access to support so people can start, and stay on, hormone therapy. The programme is a multi-modal intervention and includes flexible patient support, regular medication check-ins, side effect surveys, patient education and online resources, which will be tailored to the person’s needs. Using technology as a platform means we can reach people wherever they are, whenever they need it.
Supporting you to support your patients
To enable the myHT Guide to reach all New Zealanders prescribed hormone therapy, we will work alongside a person’s healthcare team.
- Studies in Christchurch, Waikato and Auckland reflect international findings that improving the number of people staying on hormone therapy treatment long term requires interventions tailored to the individual.
- Lack of information is a key barrier to taking treatment. If side-effects are surprising and challenging, and a person does not fully understand the long-term benefit of the treatment, they could have low motivation to continue.
- Not everyone will need tailored support. Breast Cancer Foundation NZ anticipates about 15% of participants will need one-on-one support from a nurse specialist. Many people will be able to navigate symptoms and queries with online information via the myHT Guide patient portal. myHT Guide will identify who is most at risk of stopping their treatment through regular patient surveys and a nurse will make contact and develop a tailored plan of support.
- BCFNZ is committed to working with a patient’s health providers to enhance adherence outcomes.
- If there are any concerns for your patient, we will liaise directly with you to let you know.
