Breast Cancer Foundation NZ pays tribute to Dame Jools Topp

Breast Cancer Foundation NZ is deeply saddened by the passing of Dame Jools Topp, remembering her as a treasured Kiwi icon whose openness about her breast cancer experience helped to make conversations about breast cancer more open and visible.

Known and loved by generations of New Zealanders for her humour, warmth and unmistakable wairua, Dame Jools used her voice in a powerful way, speaking candidly about the realities of living with breast cancer and helping create conversations around diagnosis, treatment and life beyond cancer.

Ah-Leen Rayner, chief executive of Breast Cancer Foundation NZ, said Dame Jools made an impact far beyond the stage: “Jools had a remarkable ability to connect with people. Aotearoa knew and loved her for her humour, warmth and generosity, but she also showed tremendous courage in sharing her own experience with breast cancer so openly.

“By talking honestly about her diagnosis, she helped many others feel less alone and encouraged important conversations around breast cancer. Her willingness to share such a personal experience made a real difference for many whānau navigating cancer.

“Jools leaves behind an extraordinary legacy. She brought joy and laughter to generations of New Zealanders and through her openness and kindness, she also brought comfort and hope to many people affected by breast cancer. We are incredibly grateful for the generosity, courage and compassion she brought to the breast cancer community.

“Our aroha is with Dame Lynda Topp, Jools’ whānau and friends, and everyone mourning her loss today.”
