What is the problem and who is affected?

Māori and Pasifika women in Aotearoa New Zealand experience higher rates of breast cancer and poorer survival outcomes than non-Māori women. These inequities are linked to gaps in care, research, and representation, with too few Māori clinicians and researchers involved in breast cancer services and research.

What is this research hoping to achieve?

Dr Maxine Ronald’s research aims to reduce breast cancer inequities by strengthening Māori leadership in research, improving evidence for equitable care, and ensuring services better reflect Te Ao Māori. The goal is to improve outcomes for wāhine Māori and help close the breast cancer survival gap.
