The Lolipop trial (Long term Outcomes of Lidocaine Infusions for Post-Operative Pain) is looking at whether lidocaine infusions given during surgery and up to 24 hours after surgery, helps with moderate or severe chronic pain at one year following surgery for breast cancer.

This is a large, phase III trial that aims to recruit around 4,300 patients from the UK, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand. 

What's involved?

Patients will be randomly allocated to one of two groups:

Group 1: Treatment group. Patients will be given lidocaine during anaesthesia as well as up to 24 hours after surgery.

    Group 2: Placebo group. Patients will be given placebo during anaesthesia and 24 hours after surgery.

    You won't know which group will will be in.

    Who is it for?

    Inclusion Criteria:

    • Female aged 18 years or over
    • undergoing mastectomy or breast conserving surgery for the removal of primary breast cancer under general anaesthesia

    Exclusion Criteria:

    • undergoing mastectomy or breast conserving surgery with add on procedures e.g laparoscopic salpingectomy
    • surgery for locoregional recurrence of breast cancer
    • Pre-existing pain at site of surgery, axilla, chest wall or the upper arm on the same side of tumour (at diagnosis prior to any tumor locating procedures)
    • Re-excision procedures where the margins at the first surgery were not sufficient

    There are also other exclusion criteria which might mean mean you will not be able to take part in this trial. Check with your study site to see if this trial is right for you.
