What is the problem and who is affected?

Breast cancer is a tremendously complex disease, particularly because every person’s genetic make-up is unique. The more data that can be gathered and understood about New Zealanders living with breast cancer, the clearer the big picture will become.

What is this research hoping to achieve?

Associate Professor Black and his team are turning to the Breast Cancer Foundation National Register to find more effective ways to treat both early and advanced breast cancer. The wealth of data within will be analysed to expand knowledge of breast cancer incidence, genetic characteristics of tumours, and patients’ responses to treatment.

“The Register gives us an amazing amount of information to work with, which we can use to gain detailed insights into breast cancer trends in New Zealand,'' says Associate Professor Black.

This funding was provided by a joint partnership between the Breast Cancer Foundation New Zealand (BCFNZ) and the Health Research Council of New Zealand (HRC).
