Board of Trustees

Justine is a professional Director and she is currently the Chair of Spark NZ, Mondiale VGL and has also chaired Breast Cancer Foundation NZ for the past 15 years. Previous roles include being a Director of Auckland International Airport and Board Member of the Financial Markets Authority. She is a Fellow of Chartered Accountants NZ and a Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Directors. Justine has spent 25 years serving as a Trustee of Breast Cancer Foundation NZ and she is passionate about achieving its vision of “zero deaths from breast cancer”. She has also been a strong and vocal advocate for female diversity in leadership and in 2020 Justine was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Governance and Women.

Sonia has extensive leadership experience in consulting, human resources, health, and social responsibility.

Sonia is a Deloitte Partner and her current role is as Deloitte’s Chief People and Purpose Officer across Asia Pacific. This role covers Deloitte’s Staff and Partners across the region including fulfilling the organisation’s wellbeing and social impact commitments. Prior to her current role she was a Deloitte NZ Consulting Partner and a member of the Deloitte NZ Board.

Sonia started her career as a registered nurse and has always had a focus on wellbeing and health, spending several years consulting in healthcare while at Deloitte and working for various health organisations during her career including as the National Manager of a Cancer Screening Service.

Sonia is a chartered accountant and also brings a commercial lens to all of her work.

Having had breast cancer and benefited from excellent screening and care, Sonia is a fervent supporter of Breast Cancer Foundation NZ and delighted to be on the Board.

Gordon joined the Board of Breast Cancer Foundation NZ as a Trustee in August 2022, and was appointed Vice Chair in December 2024.

Gordon is an Independent Director of NZX-listed Delegat Group, and is the Advisory Chair of two private companies. He was also an Independant Director of Spark New Zealand until August 2025. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Canterbury, is a Fellow of Chartered Accountants of Australia and New Zealand, and a Member of the Institute of Directors.

He is a highly credentialed business leader, who held a range of senior executive roles over a 15-year tenure at Ryman Healthcare Group, including Group CEO from June 2017 to October 2021. Prior to this Gordon was a Corporate Finance and Advisory Partner with PwC and was also the Finance Director of a high-tech UK listed company based on the Cambridge Science Park in England.

Gordon has a strong passion for the mission of the Foundation, having lost his mum to breast cancer when she was only 56. The experience of breast cancer on a loved one and whānau left Gordon with a drive to help others either avoid this suffering, or cope with as much knowledge and support as possible.

Gordon’s business leadership experience in healthcare, along with his Governance, operational and commercial expertise complements the existing skills-mix of the Board.

Reena graduated from the University of Natal Medical School as a Fellow of the College of Pathologists (South Africa). She then practised as Consultant Pathologist/Senior Lecturer at the Natal Medical School. In 1996, Reena immigrated to New Zealand, practising at Diagnostic Medlab.

Since her arrival in New Zealand, Reena has completed her Ph.D (2000) and The Australasian College of Pathologist Fellowship (2013). She developed her subspecialty interests in gynaecology, oncology and breast pathology with presentations and publications. She is the Clinical Director of Surgical Pathology, Waitemata District Health Board and the chair of the Regional Anatomical Pathology Network

For many years Reena was the lead Pathologist for Breast Screen Limited (Auckland Central) and actively pursued research projects in women’s health. She was a member of the Breast Screen Advisory Group, an active member of the Auckland Breast Cancer Study Group and was president of the NZ Society of Cytology. Reena was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2013 New Year Honours in recognition of her services as a histocytopathologist.

Patricia has 30 years of charitable experience and is currently a trustee of Breast Cancer Foundation NZ, the Breast Cancer NZ Register Trust, and the Athlae Lyon Starship Trust.

Patricia was a founding trustee of the Starship Foundation and Vice Chair of the Friends of Starship. Patricia was the first CEO of the Starship Foundation, a role she held for nine years.

Patricia has been a Board member of Epsom Girls Grammar School, The New Zealand TelePaediatric Society and Chair of Vivid Solutions Limited (New Zealand’s first paediatric telemedicine network). She has been secretary of the Laura Fergusson Women’s Committee, a trustee of the Fundraising Institute of New Zealand, The Children’s Promise (a global millennium appeal) and a committee member of the first TV3 Telethon.

Anna is a partner at the law firm Bell Gully. Bell Gully has had a long-term association with Breast Cancer Foundation NZ and currently provides the Foundation with support and legal advice through its pro bono programme.

As a specialist in corporate lawyer, Anna has extensive experience advising on major transactions, complex joint venture arrangements and securities law, as well as advising boards of major companies on various governance and disclosure matters.

Anna enjoys the ability to use her skills to give something back to the community and personally support a cause that helps so many.

Prue Kapua (Ngāti Whakaue, Ngāti Kahungunu) was National President of Māori Womens Welfare League from 2014 to 2022. She is currently a trustee of Māori Women’s Development Inc. and a member of the Waitangi Tribunal. She is a lawyer and Principal of Tamatekapua Law.

Prue was Deputy Chair of the Medical Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal and a director of First Health NZ Ltd (a Southern Cross NZ Ltd subsidiary). In 2000 the Minister of Health appointed her to represent the interests of Māori women in the Gisborne Cervical Cancer Inquiry.

Mary Los’e is the Chief Executive of the Pacific Business Trust. Of Tongan and Māori descent, Mary is Ngāti Rereahu ki Ngāti Maniapoto and is from the villages of Ha’ano, Foa and Faleloa, Ha’apai.

Prior to joining PBT, Mary was the Chief Service Experience Officer at National Telehealth Services, Whakarongorau Aotearoa. Mary led the community co-design and operational delivery of the Pacific and Māori Telehealth pathways to meet the needs of communities during the resurgence of COVID-19.

Mary’s experience in the private and public sector includes 25 years as a journalist and editor in multimedia and broadcasting. She went on to further hone her communication and engagement skills with the Ministry for Pacific Peoples, Housing New Zealand (now Kāinga Ora), Bank of New Zealand’s Innovation Unit and New Zealand Magazines.

Mary has a Bachelor and Master of Business Administration from the University of Auckland.

Eugénie Masfen-Yan is a passionate New Zealander based in Auckland, with a diverse background spanning arts, investment, and philanthropy. She plays an active role in her family office and foundation, where she channels her passion for social impact into initiatives that drive meaningful change.

With a strong commitment to improving outcomes in children’s and women’s health, Eugénie is deeply engaged in causes that address equity and access in these critical areas. Her philanthropic work reflects her belief in the power of community-led solutions and sustainable support systems for vulnerable populations.

Eugénie holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Auckland and a Master of Arts from the University of Hong Kong. Her years living and working in Asia provided her with a global perspective, which she continues to apply to her work in New Zealand. Upon returning home, she focused on raising her family while being involved with the family business and charitable foundation.

Eugénie’s experience at the intersection of investment, philanthropy, and advocacy underscores her holistic approach to leadership and community impact. Her work reflects her deep-rooted commitment to fostering positive change and advancing opportunities for those in need.

Andrew Taylor is the Head of Product and an executive director at Theta, a New Zealand-based technology company, where he oversees the organisation's in-house developed SaaS products and innovation initiatives.

With over 25 years of experience in IT across New Zealand and the UK, Andrew is independently accredited as a Chartered IT Professional NZ (CITPNZ) by ITP, the professional body for the IT sector in New Zealand.

Since 2020, Andrew has served as a trustee, bringing his expertise in technical governance and innovation to support BCFNZ’s mission.

Shalene brings a respected blend of professional leadership and personal resilience to her role as Trustee at Breast Cancer Foundation NZ, having joined the Board in August 2025.

An accomplished Board Chair and Director, Shalene has a strong track record in guiding organisations through strategic transformation and growth. Her expertise spans governance, stakeholder engagement, and implementing strategies that deliver substantial results and enable the achievement of long-term goals. Shalene is currently Chairperson of a large privately owned business and provides Board Advisory services across a group of related businesses.

Shalene’s commitment to the Foundation’s mission is deeply personal. Diagnosed with breast cancer four years ago, and fortunate to have detected it early, she is passionate about ensuring others have the same chance.

Leveraging both her professional acumen and lived experience, Shalene is dedicated to helping the organisation achieve its strategic priorities. Her leadership and empathy will support the Foundation’s continuing journey toward ending deaths from breast cancer.
