Accommodation for people affected by cancer who live outside the Wellington Area. Margaret Stewart House provides comfortable, friendly and convenient accommodation.

The 18 units within the house provide a home away from home. All rooms have ensuites and tea and coffee making facilities. All clients must be mobile and able to be independent. We have supervisors and volunteers working to provide a comfortable and safe stay.

CanSurvive Dragon Boat Club

We provide dragon boat training, fitness and camaraderie for women in the Wellington region who have had a diagnosis of breast cancer, as well as friends and supporters.

We have two teams – CanSurvive for breast cancer survivors and Can2 open to all women. We train on Wellington harbour to attend dragonboat regattas in New Zealand and internationally. Each year we race at the Wellington Festival, a regional event and the NZDBA dragon boat National Championships. During winter we have some paddling and fitness activities. Our members range in age from 20s to 70s and come from a wide range of backgrounds. We welcome all women to join us in this exhilarating sport.

CanTeen Aotearoa

Around 4,200 rangatahi across Aotearoa are impacted by cancer each year, whether it's their own diagnosis or that of an immediate family member. CanTeen's mission is to make sure they don't have to face cancer alone. CanTeen provides a wide range of free support services for rangatahi, including individual therapeutic support with specially trained Psychosocial Support Workers, peer support through events and programmes run by Youth Workers, and 24/7 online support through CanTeen Connect.

Clinical Genetics Auckland - Fertility Associates

Clinical Genetics Auckland (CGA) was started in 2015 by senior genetic counsellors Jenny Eaton and Kim Gamet.

The genetic counselling role is to inform, educate and support individuals and families on the relevance, appropriateness, availability and potential outcomes of genetic testing and known genetic disorders. Genetic counsellors can provide genetic advice on genetic testing and cancer risk assessment.

CNSST Foundation, formerly known as Chinese New Settlers Services Trust

CNSST provide culturally appropriate wrap-around services to ethnic communities including social services (social work and counselling, children and youth programmes, parenting programmes, employment and enterprise and newcomers' settlement support), education (tertiary education, vocational training e.g. MYOB&XERO, Food Safety Certification, Chinese Cultural Competency Programme) and social housing.

Cold caps

Some chemotherapies cause temporary hair loss. Your oncologist will let you know if you're likely to benefit from scalp cooling (reduce hair loss). While automated scalp cooling systems prevent hair loss related to chemotherapy, they're not available in all parts of New Zealand. A cold cap is an alternative which will minimise hair loss caused from some chemotherapies that are associated with mild or moderate hair loss, such as weekly taxanes.

The two types of cold caps that New Zealand patients buy are Icekap and Penguin Cold Caps. They need to be purchased online so you'll need at least a week for delivery. It's important to do your research because scalp cooling can be fiddly and you need to know you can manage this and that it's right for you, before you purchase a cap.

Chemokit is designed for convenience. It's a new addition to the range of cold caps available. Please check with your oncologist if this is okay to use and feel free talk to the BCFNZ nurses if you want to discuss if this right for you and the treatment you're having.

Counselling & Arts Therapy
Arts therapy connects you with your deeper emotions, as humans we are more likely to work in an unedited and unfiltered way when working creatively. This means that we may be able to move to the heart of the matter quicker than talking alone.

During your sessions, you may be invited to use collage, drawing, painting, sculpture, creative writing, clay work, movement, and more, to connect with and express your inner world.

If you think of yourself as not a creative person, that is ok. Using art in therapy is focussed on the process of creating and meaning making, not about the end product. It can be effective for everyone, young and old.

Some sessions may not use art making. We may focus on talking, and that is ok too.

Da Vinci Plastic Surgery is based in Tauranga with two resident plastic surgeons, Mr Adam Bialostocki and Mr Brandon Adams. Specialising in breast reconstruction immediately or after surgery, working in both public and private independently or alongside other specialists for combined procedures. We have a relationship with all medical insurers and are an affiliated provider for Southern Cross. Urgent consultation spaces are kept for patients either referred by their GP or other specialists.

Dental services

Dental health is important during breast cancer treatment but it can be very difficult for adults to access information about free dental services. Availability differs from region-to-region, so it's important to search locally to see what's available. It's also important to discuss your dental health needs with your cancer treatment centre as they may need to provide a referral for you.
Here's some information about accessing services:

A limited range of dental services are funded for some adults who're referred by their dental practitioner or GP. This is treatment related so it may only be relevant for those receiving bisphosphonate treatments.
People on low incomes who have a community services card may be eligible for some funding for dental treatment, such as pain relief or extractions.
Regional DHB-funded services are available for emergency dental work. Talk to your cancer treatment centre about your eligibility.
Occasionally, organisations like New Zealand Dental Association or large practices like Lumino, have free dental days.

Egg freezing. This involves the steps of an IVF cycle up to and including egg collection. Eggs are then frozen. When you want to use the eggs, you'll resume the second half of an IVF cycle.
Embryo freezing. If a woman has a partner, it is better to freeze embryos.
Ovarian tissue freezing. This technique involves removing one or both ovaries and freezing thin slices of ovarian tissue. The slices are transplanted back to the women once treatment has finished.

Spring with Sarah

Spring with Sarah provides grief and trauma counselling, coaching and workshops. Online appointments available via Zoom.
Sarah's lived experience of grief has been the driving force into her further education and qualifications in this area. Sarah has a Bachelor of Psychology and is a Master practitioner of NLP and Timeline Therapy®️. Sarah also has a Post Graduate Certificate in counselling.
She is passionate about helping people through grief and rediscovering what it means to be happy.

We're currently actively recruiting anyone who has experienced breast cancer to become part of our newly formed Taranaki Pinks team.

Our dragon boating club was founded in 2008. Since then, the team has paddled on the Waitara river and competes in regattas with passion, commitment and team spirit. Dragon boating is an ideal physical activity for anyone who has experienced breast cancer. It is non-weight bearing which is associated with a low risk of injury. Dragon boating also offers camaraderie, positivity and an active lifestyle.

Tauranga Yoga Centre - Pink Yoga

Tauranga Yoga Centre provides a safe, supportive and fully equipped venue in which to practice yoga, together with a qualified teacher.
These classes are designed for women whose lives have been affected by cancer and similar autoimmune diseases. They are designed to be gentle and nurturing. Students are taught to breathe correctly and mindfully whilst gently stretching with awareness in order to build strength and stamina.

Te Pou Toetoe: Linwood Pool - Women's swimming

Women's only session every Wednesday from 3:00 - 9:30pm. It's a time that the pool environment is open to women only. It provides access to a lane pool, toddler pool, learn to swim pool, manu pool and spa. All women are welcome to attend.

Te Wahi Ora Women's Retreat

A women's retreat on the beachfront at Piha. A place to go to refresh your soul and warm your heart, with massage and counselling facilities.

This retreat has been created for all women who want to spend a few days or a few weeks at a beach resort at Auckland’s renowned west coast beach, Piha. They have reasonable rates which include all meals and individual accommodation. This ensures total rest and the freedom to relax.

The Care Community Trust

The Care Community Trust is an incorporated charitable trust based in Hamilton in New Zealand. The Trust is run by volunteers who offer free weekends in motel-type accommodation at the privately owned Camp Raglan that overlooks Ngarunui Beach.
We offer "time out" weekends for small groups of cancer patients and support partners referred by the Cancer Society or similar organisation, or your doctor. Meals are provided and your time here is without any agenda.

Waipuna Hospice

Waipuna Hospice specialises in providing symptom control and pain management for terminal patients. We also offer support services to patients and their family/whānau, friends, or staff at rest homes and the hospital. We care for each person as an individual and consider their physical, emotional, social, cultural and spiritual needs. In addition, we provide respite care, meal preparation, and bereavement support. All our services come at no cost to the patient or their families.

Work and Income

It's important to get in touch with Work and Income as soon as you know you're likely to lose income because of breast cancer treatment. Have a look at this guide which helps you find out the ways Work and Income can help you and your family.

If you have to stop work for treatment, you may be eligible for the Jobseeker Allowance or the Supported Living Allowance. You may also be eligible for these allowances if you're working part-time or have to withdraw from study. Work and Income will also be able to guide you if you're eligible for childcare support. For more information, check out the Work and Income website or talk to your hospital social worker. If you're unwell and unable to manage an appointment with Work and Income, it is possible to appoint a family member to act as your agent.
